Installation

There are two methods to install the theme.

Installing via WordPress

  1. Download the zipped theme pack to your local computer from themeforest and extract the ZIP file contents to a folder on your local computer.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Themes tab.
  3. Now click on the Add New button.
  4. Click on the Upload Theme button, Browse for file called bone.zip in the extracted folder then click Open.
  5. Click the Install Now button.
  6. Activate the theme from this page, or Return to Themes Page and activate from there.

Installing via FTP

  1. Download the zipped theme pack to your local computer from themeforest and extract the ZIP file contents to a folder on your local computer.
  2. In the extracted folder you will find bone.zip. Extract this file .
  3. Using an FTP client to access your host web server.
  4. Upload the Theme files in the extracted folder called bone to (/wp-content/themes/) directory provided by WordPress.
  5. Navigate to Appearance → Themes, then click the Activate on Bone theme.

Installing Required Plugins

After activating Bone theme, you will be asked to install required plugins. Click Begin installing plugins to continue.

Select all plugins and select Install in Bulk Actions option, then click Apply.

For the recommended plugins, you can choose not to install any certain plugin if you aren't going to use that feature, for example, if you don't need hiDPI support you can choose not to install WP Retina 2x plugin.

Wait for all plugins to be installed.

Notice: There have been some changes in the required plugins for the theme. From version 3.0.0, the theme no longer uses Meta Box Group plugin, you can safely delete it after updating Bone theme to 3.0.0 or later. The additional required plugins are Meta Box AIO and Bone Widgets.

Updating Theme

This theme may be updated periodically in order to add new features and fix bugs. When a new update be available an update message will appears on your blog dashboard . As a customer, you can download the most current version from your ThemeForest account.

Updating Automatically

Envato have developed the Envato Market Plugin for WordPress. You can use this to receive notification of updates to themes purchased from ThemeForest and to automatically update (upon clicking) directly from within your WordPress admin area.

  1. Download the plugin zip file to your computer following instructions on the Envato Market Plugin page.
  2. In your WordPress admin area, go to Plugins → Add New then click Upload.
  3. Click Choose File, select the plugin zip file you downloaded and click Install Now.
  4. After installation, click Activate.
  5. Click the new Envato Toolkit link in the menu and follow the instructions to configure the plugin.

Updating Manually

  1. Download the most current version from ThemeForest in the "Downloads" area of your account.
  2. Unzip the package and locate bone.zip in the theme folder.
  3. Go to Appearance → Themes and activate another theme such as the default WordPress theme.
  4. Delete the Bone theme which is now inactive.
  5. Go to Install Themes → Upload then install and activate bone.zip from the new package.

Installing Sample Content

This method will import posts, pages, menus and images only not the demo site theme settings.

We highly recommend against using this method in production. Please only use on a an extra copy for testing or experimenting. This method most likely will fail on shared web hosts. Uncheck "import attachments" option if it fails and try again.

  1. Log into Admin and go to Tools → Import → WordPress.
  2. Install the WordPress importer.
  3. Select the bone-sample.xml (located in the Bone Package folder) and upload it.
  4. On the next screen, under Assign Authors, select or enter a new username for each author.
  5. Please be patient as it will take quite some time. Do not interrupt it.

Migrating From Another Theme

If you are migration from a theme which used the native featured images functionality of WordPress, please use the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to resize all the thumbnails. Install the plugin and run it from Tool → Regen. Thumbnails. Skipping this will make your existing images look out of proportions or stretched.

There are two menu locations in the theme:

  • Primary Menu
  • Footer Menu

If you have existing menu, see Manage Existing Menu or else see Creating a New Menu to create a new menu.

Manage Existing Menu

  1. Go to Appearance → Menus
  2. In the Manage Locations area, assign menu to appropriate Theme Locations. Click Save Changes

Creating a New Menu

  1. Go to Appearance → Menus
  2. Click Create a new menu. Enter a menu's name and click Create Menu
  3. Check the menu item in the boxes in the left column, click Add to Menu to add items to the menu and drag/drop to arrange them.
  4. Click Save Menu
  5. Now assign your newly created menu to appropriate locations

By default, your site title will be used as a text-based logo. However, you can also use an image-based logo.

Any size would fit, but we recommend logo's resolution should be smaller than 500px x 100px. The resolution of our demo's logo is 200px x 70 px

  1. Navigate to Appearance → Bone Settings → General.
  2. Under Site logo option, click Upload to select your logo image.
  3. After selecting your logo, Logo padding option will appear. Set the logo's padding to your desire.
  4. You can also set a small version of your logo which will be displayed on small screen device in place of the normal logo in Small logo option.
  5. Click Save changes to save your setting.
To be retina friendly (look high quality on devices like iPad), you will have to upload a high resolution of your logo that has double resolution of the normal one.

To setup your site header, navigate to Appearance → Bone Settings → Header.

Header Layout

The theme has 4 header layouts to choose from. Click on following images to see the corresponding header layout in action.

Header Background

Click Upload to select your site's background image. You can also set background properties which are Background repeat, Background Size, Background Attachment and Background Position.

Sticky Header

Switch this option ON will make the site header's navigation sticky.

Display login button in header

Switch this option ON to display login button in site header.

Remember to click Save Changes to save all your settings.

To setup your home page, navigate to Appearance → Bone Settings → Layout.

Featured Block

Appearance → Bone Settings → Layout → Featured Block.

Post that you assigned as featured will appear in this section. To define how featured posts are chosen, see Featured Posts Source.

Featured Block Layout.

The theme has 6 featured block layouts to choose from. Click on following images to see the corresponding Featured block layout in action.

Featured Posts Source

There are 4 methods to get posts for featured block:

  1. Select manually: You will manually select posts to be displayed in Featured block from Posts Select field.
  2. Marked as featured: Posts that have Make this post featured checkbox checked under their Post Options in Post Edit page will be chosen to display in Featured block.
  3. By tags: Posts that have tags selected in Tags Select field.
  4. By categories: Posts that belong to categories selected in Categories Select field.
Make sure the number of posts selected to be displayed in Featured block is sufficient in relation to the selected Featured block layout.

Content Layout

Appearance → Bone Settings → Layout → Content Layout.

Sidebar Position

Choose your sidebar position on home page: Left, Right, or None.

Content Layout

There are 8 content layouts to choose from.

Pagination Type

There are 4 type of Pagination:

  1. Standard: Pagination with Next, Previous and adjacent page links.
  2. Next and Previous: Pagination with only Next and Previous links.
  3. Ajax load more button: Button to AJAX-load next set of posts
  4. Infinity scroll: Automatically AJAX-load next set of posts when user scrolls down the page.

Smart Sticky Sidebar

Switch this On will make page sidebar stick to browser viewport.

Remember to click Save Changes to save all your settings.

Avoid duplicate posts on homepage

Switch to On to avoid posts to duplicate on homepage. Make sure you have sufficient number of posts to use this feature.

More Reading Section

Appearance → Bone Settings → Layout → More Reading section.

Display additional posts by selected cateogries. Posts in this section will not duplicate posts in Content section, therefore make sure you have sufficient number of posts for each selected category.

Other Templates Layout

You can choose content layout for each templates such as Search Result, Author page, Category page, etc. at Appearance → Bone Settings → Templates.

Featured image

While the theme can function without featured images, it's highly recommended that you add a featured image to each post. This not only makes your site/blog more lively but also improves user experience. To set the featured image, use the WordPress normal method.

If you have existing content and featured images, you will have to use the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to resize all the thumbnails. Install the plugin and run it from Tool → Regen. Thumbnails. Skipping this will make your existing images look out of proportions or stretched.

Image size (dimensions) will depend on what type of layout you're using. Recommended size for images is:

  • 1600 x 900(px) if you use full-width layout and slider.
  • 820 x 480(px) if you don't use full-width layout or slider.

About Retina image

Retina images are used for hi-definition / hight DPI screens such as iPad, Macbook Retina and so on. For these devices, you need to upload images twice the recommended dimensions above.

BONE, when activated, informs you to install a few plugins and one of them is WP Retina 2x. Assuming you had existing images that are large enough, you can convert them to retina images from Media → Retina, after activating the plugin.

To enable theme compatibility to Retina devices, go to Appearance → Bone Settings → Miscellaneous → High resolution (WP Retina 2x plugin required).

Post formats

This theme supports following post formats: Image, Gallery, Audio, Video, Link, Quote, and Aside.

Format Image

  1. To create a post format Image, in WordPress post edit page, select Image option in Format box.
  2. In Post format: Image box, click Select or Upload images to select image to assigned to this post.
  3. Click Publish ( or Update if you're editing a post ) to save post.
If you don't assign a featured image, the previously selected image will automatically be assigned as featured image of the post.

Format Gallery

  1. To create a post format Gallery, in WordPress post edit page, select Gallery option in Format box.
  2. In Post format: Gallery box, click Select or Upload images to select images to be added to the gallery.
  3. You can also choose to display or not thumbnail images as well as transition type of the gallery slider.
  4. Click Publish ( or Update if you're editing a post ) to save post.
If you don't assign a featured image, the first image of the gallery will automatically be assigned as featured image of the post.

Format Video

  1. To create a post format Video, in WordPress post edit page, select Video option in Format box.
  2. In Post format: Video box, paste the video full URL into Video full URL field.
    Supported sites are: Youtube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Vine, etc. For a full list of supported sites, please check WordPress Embeds
    Please paste in the full URL from your browser address bar, not the embed code.
  3. You can click Preview to get an idea how the video will appear.
  4. Click Publish ( or Update if you're editing a post ) to save post.
If you don't assign a featured image, the theme will automatically get a thumbnail of the video from its origin site if possible and set it as current post's featured image.

Format Audio

  1. To create a post format Audio, in WordPress post edit page, select Audio option in Format box.
  2. In Post format: Audio box, paste the audio full URL into Audio full URL field.
    Supported sites are: Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Spotify, etc. For a full list of supported sites, please check WordPress Embeds
    Please paste in the full URL from your browser address bar, not the embed code.
  3. You can click Preview to get an idea how the audio will appear.
  4. Or, you can upload your own audio file by clicking Select or Upload files button. Remember to fill in Audio title and Audio artist field.
  5. Click Publish ( or Update if you're editing a post ) to save post.
If you don't assign a featured image, the theme will automatically get a thumbnail of the audio from its origin site if possible and set it as current post's featured image.

Format Link

  1. To create a post format Link, in WordPress post edit page, select Link option in Format box.
  2. In Post format: Link box, fill in needed informations into all the fields.
  3. Set featured image for the post. This image will be used as the background for link title.
  4. Click Publish ( or Update if you're editing a post ) to save post.

Format Quote

  1. To create a post format Quote, in WordPress post edit page, select Quote option in Format box.
  2. In Post format: Quote box, fill in needed informations into all the fields.
  3. Set featured image for the post. This image will be used as the background for the quote.
  4. Click Publish ( or Update if you're editing a post ) to save post.

Post Options

You can find Post Options box under the post content editor in post edit page.

Post Layout

There are 6 post layouts to choose from. By default, if you don't select a specific post layout, the layout selected in Appearance → Bone Settings → Single → Single layout will be apllied.

Post that has format other than Standard can not have Parallax Billboard layout. It will automatically fall back to standard layout.

Sidebar Position

Sidebar position can be set to Left or Right. By default, if you don't select a specific sidebar position, the sidebar position selected in Appearance → Bone Settings → Layout → Content Layout → Sidebar position will be apllied.

On full-width post layout, sidebar will be omitted as a certain result.

Review System

  • To add review to a post, check Show review score checkbox option.
  • Type in Criteria name and set the corresponding score by adjusting the slider below it. The score is based on a ladder of 10.
  • Click Add more to add a criteria.
  • The Total average score will be computed automatically. If you want to override this score, type in Review total score field your own score.
  • Optional - Type in Review summary field summary of the review.
  • Optional - Type in Pros and Cons of the reviewed item. Click + button to add more Pros or Cons item.

Remember to click Publish or Update to save post.

How to Paginate a Post

In order to paginate your blog post, in the post content editor, switch to the Text view (if you are using the Visual view) and then enter the following code to wherever you want to break the post up into a new page:

How to enable zoom for an image

Since WordPress 5.0, this option is only available when you use the Classic Editor.

Select image and click Edit icon.

A popup will appear. In Modal image option, click On, then click Update.

Navigate to Appearance → Bone Settings → Single to setup your single page.

Single layout

There are 6 post layouts to choose from (See Post Options). If a specific post layout is selected other than Default in Post Options, it will override this setting.

Other settings are: Single sidebar position, Post navigation, Author box, and Related articles. These settings are self-explained, however you can play with them to get an idea how they affect single layout.

Select posts to display right below site header on single page.

The theme comes with 5 custom widgets. You have to install the Bone Widgets plugin to be able to use these widgets (except the Popular Posts widget and Mailchimp Subscription widget).

Ad Widget

Use to display ads. Just simply enter the code for each screen size breakpoint (Google Adsense, html, .etc). Then place it in one of four Ads Sidebars or any sidebar you want.

Categories Widget

Display categories ordered by number of posts or alphabet.

Popular Posts Widget

Display popular posts using the widget by WordPress Popular Posts plugin. To have this widget you need to install the mentioned plugin when prompted after installing Bone theme. You can also install it manually here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-popular-posts/

Post Slider Widget

Display posts ordered by date or likes or comments or random in a slider.

Post List Widget

Display posts ordered by date or random. There are 4 layouts to choose from.

Review Post List Widget

Display review posts ordered by score or date. You can also choose time range to choose post from: All time, Year, Month, Weak.

Subscribe/Newsletter Widget

To have the subscribe/newsletter widget like on the demo page, please install this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/mailchimp-for-wp/

After installing the plugin, configure your subscription form following below steps:

  1. Go to MailChimp for WP > Forms
  2. Select at least one MailChimp list to subscribe people to.
  3. (Optional) Add more fields to your form using the add MailChimp field dropdown.

Save the configuration and navigate to Appearance -> Widgets and drop the widget Mailchimp Sign-up Form to your desired sidebar.

Setting up shop frontpage

After installing Woocommerce plugin, you will have some default shop pages such as Shop (displays products archive), Cart (displays customer pruct cart) and Checkout. While you can use the Shop page as your shop frontpage, Bone theme offers an additional custom shop frontpage with options to adjust its layout to your desire. To create a shop frontpage, please follow these steps below:

  1. Please navigate to Pages → Add New. Enter your page's title, then choose page template as Woocommerce Frontpage at the option on the right. You can choose page title's style and sidebar position in Page options metabox below the editor. You can choose background for page title by setting a featured image for the page.

  2. Click Publish to create your page.
  3. The shop frontpage is now ready, you can take a look at it. You can adjust its layout by navigating to Theme Options → Woocommerce. Here you can reorder and enable/disable certain sections of shop frontpage, set sidebar position.

Other options

You can navigate to Theme Options → Woocommerce to adjust other options such as product/category page sidebar position, choose which products to display on homepage.

Social Network

To set up your social network, navigate to Appearance → Bone Settings → Social. Then fill in each network your profile/page full URL. You can also reorder or enable/disable them.

These social networks will be used for social network links in site header and footer.

Typography

To set up text typography, navigate to Appearance → Bone Settings → Typography. The theme supported Google Fonts for using on your site. Though you can use up to 3 font families, it's highly recommended that you should use maximum 2 font families for best performance.

Import/Export Options

You can Import/Export Theme option settings by navigating to Appearance → Bone Settings → Import/Export.

Be careful when importing options as this action will overwrite all existing options.

All of our Themes are able to be translated into any language. The process of translating the theme is a user responsibility. The following instructions are given as guidance.

Translate Themes with the Loco Translate Plugin

The easiest way to translate your theme is by using the Loco Translate WordPress plugin. After you have installed and activated the plugin, simply go to Loco Translate → Manage translations and translate the theme from your WordPress backend following the plugin instructions.

Translate Themes using the Poedit Program

  1. Download and install Poedit
  2. Connect to your site, then open wp-content/themes/bone/languages directory
  3. Download the default.po file and open it with Poedit.
  4. Translate file and save it as your language code (for example bg_BG.po).
  5. Two files will be generated after save: bg_BG.po and bg_BG.mo .
  6. Upload the .mo and .po files into wp-content/themes/bone/languages folder
Your WordPress installation should be in the language you intend on using the site.

Configure Site Language in WordPress Settings

WordPress will automatically use the right language files if they exist. You can set the site language of your WordPress installation in Settings → General. You can select your language at the bottom of the page:
